LG Energy Solution signed a deal for the joint development of prismatic(각형) batteries with General Motors (GM), becoming the only company to have all three form factors for electric vehicle (EV) batteries in its portfolio.

This is the first time the Korean battery giant officially announced plans to develop prismatic batteries. The batteries developed through this agreement will be installed in GM’s next-generation EVs.

The deal cemented LG Energy Solution’s status as the industry’s only manufacturer capable of producing pouch, cylindrical and prismatic batteries, which are the most commonly used battery types for EVs.

The company said the agreement holds additional significance as the global EV battery market continues to diversify. Carmakers are developing detailed strategies tailored to vehicle sizes and market specifics, leading to more complex and varied demands for battery manufacturers.

Against this backdrop, LG Energy Solution said the deal will enhance its ability to offer tailored solutions that meet diverse customer needs, and the company will build on its technologies and the multiple patents it holds across designing, manufacturing and packaging processes.

LG Energy Solution said its technological prowess in stacking layers of materials in casing will boost its prismatic battery development capabilities.

Along with diversified form factors, the company said it will also enhance its competitiveness in the mid- to low-end battery market. During an investor event in October, LG Energy Solution announced its long-term strategy of placing strategic emphasis on lithium iron phosphate batteries.

The company clinched a series of EV battery supply deals earlier this year. They include cylindrical 46-series batteries for Rivian EVs in November, pouch batteries for Ford in October and Mercedes Benz in September and pouch batteries for Renault in July.
